The Israel-Iran conflict that began in June of this year has reached a truce. The surprise attack by Israel on Iranian nuclear sites started off the conflict on June 13th, and it quickly escalated to flurries of missiles being launched by both nations.
Over the next week and a half, both sides exchanged intensive strikes, with the Israeli air force striking dozens of targets deep inside Iran, and Iran launching ballistic missiles and drones into Israeli territory. On the 9th day of fighting, U.S. forces carried out airstrikes on three Iranian nuclear sites, with hopes of putting a swift end to the conflict. Iran responded with an attack on the U.S. Al-Udeid Air Base in Qatar, which was evacuated before the attack and resulted in no casualties.
Shortly afterward, the United States and Qatar jointly proposed a ceasefire, and both Israel and Iran signaled willingness to discuss terms. By the evening of June 23, U.S. President Donald Trump announced that Israel and Iran had agreed to a ceasefire deal to end what he dubbed the “12-day war,” with the truce to take effect the next morning.
